Day 1: Crested Butte to Buena Vista
Make your way to the Taylor river and climb this gorgeous valley past Taylor Reservoir and ascend Cottonwood Pass, Colorado’s second-highest pass at 12,126’. Then it’s a fun, stunning descent into Buena Vista for our first overnight stay with plenty of great dining options. This route is 100% paved.
Day 2: Buena Vista to Salida
Start by crossing the high plateau on the base of Mt. Princton, dipping into Chalk Creek with a serene out-and-back from the hot springs. From there, you will pedal Southeast with big views before arriving in one of Colorado’s most artistic towns, Salida. You will have plenty of time to stroll through this unique community nestled on the Arkansas River.
Day 3: Salida to Gunnison
Enjoy another spectacular pass, Monarch Pass, taking you to 11,312’. Once there its a very long and scenic descent to Gunnison, home of Western Colorado University and the gateway to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and a true hub of the central Rockies.
Day 4: Black Canyon Return
Take a slightly downhill ride along the Gunnison River to the Blue Mesa Reservoir and then climb through the Curecanti National Recreation Area to a stunning overlook of Needle Rock near the mouth of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
Day 5: Gunnison to C.B., via Ohio Creek
The peloton rides to the finish in Crested Butte, but not before a visit along the Ohio Creek with sweeping vistas of the Castles Range and a chance to savor fresh spring water craved by locals before continuing north to finish the tour where we began. Stay for an extra night or two and catch some of the best flowers and gorgeous trails to hike and bike.
